Kenya is an overwhelmingly Christian country (85.5% of the population) with high levels of practice, where the historic Protestant churches, the Catholic Church and a growing number of evangelical and Pentecostal churches play a central role in social and political life. Muslims, about one Kenyan in ten, live mainly on the Swahili coast and in the north-east, populated by Somalis. The state is secular and the Constitution guarantees freedom of worship.
