Economy
A service economy, backed by a solid industrial base
One of the two largest economies in East Africa along with Ethiopia, Kenya is a regional hub for finance, transport and digital services, nicknamed "Silicon Savannah" since the success of M-Pesa mobile payments. Agriculture still employs a large share of the population and provides the main exports: tea, of which the country is the world's largest exporter, cut flowers, coffee and fruit. Safari tourism and diaspora remittances are other major sources of foreign currency. Growth is solid, but the country faces high public debt, which led the government to highly contested tax rises in 2024.
