Population
A population concentrated around large urban areas
Kenya's population is young and growing fast, even though fertility has fallen sharply since the 1980s. Two-thirds of the inhabitants still live in the countryside, mainly in the highlands and around Lake Victoria, but Nairobi and its outskirts are growing very quickly. The country has more than 40 ethnic groups; the largest are the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjin, Luo and Kamba, and ethnicity weighs heavily in political life. Kenya also hosts more than 800,000 refugees, mainly Somali and South Sudanese, in the Dadaab and Kakuma camps.
