Environmental resources and challenges of Kenya

Kenya generates most of its electricity from renewable sources, notably geothermal power from the Rift Valley, of which it is Africa's leading producer, and the Lake Turkana wind farm, the largest on the continent when it came online in 2019. The country is, however, highly exposed to climate change: the 2020–2023 drought, the worst in forty years, decimated the livestock of herders in the north, before deadly floods in 2024. Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai brought the fight against deforestation to wide attention with her Green Belt Movement.
