Population
A population concentrated around large urban areas
The world's most populous country since the mid-2020s, India nevertheless remains mostly rural: more than two-thirds of its population lives outside the big cities. Its population growth, long very rapid, has slowed markedly since the 1980s, but large differences remain between states — the North and East remaining generally more fertile than the South, already close to replacement level.
