Federal republic — Federal parliamentary republic
India is a federal parliamentary republic of 28 states and 8 union territories. The President, elected for five years by indirect suffrage through an electoral college of national MPs and members of the state assemblies, has an essentially representative and ceremonial role. Real executive power lies with the Prime Minister, leader of the majority party or coalition in the Lok Sabha, who heads the Council of Ministers and is accountable to Parliament. Narendra Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have dominated national politics since 2014.
